Life in your hands

Today's lyric:
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
"And I wish you would leave me.
And I wish you would go.
And I wish you didn't need me.
And I wish I didn't love you so.

Cause I just can't go on.
So please don't do me wrong.
No, I won't do you harm.
My love for you goes on and on."

Longpigs: "On and on"
From the album: "The sun is often out"

Where are they now

Walked into the restaurant's bog and was confronted by a bloke using a urinal - and texting!

Who says men can't multitask?

Perhaps I should be told?

Today's lyric:
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
"I want ten Cadillacs and a diamond mill
Ten suits of clothes all dressed to kill
Ten room house and-a some barbecue
And-a fifty chicks none over twenty-two."

Ry Cooder: "Smack dab in the middle"
From the album: "Chicken Skin Music"

Not as lewd as it looks

Now, apart from the odd stint of homing displaced persons, there has only ever been four people sharing this house together.

So now that we are officially Empty Nesters, why oh why oh why are there five toothbrushes in the holder...?

Oh, and many thanks to those who replied to my poll (previous post).

Have a great weekend, y'all (I'm floor-tiling - I get all the good jobs...)

You spin me right round, baby

Today's lyric:
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
"Need a friend to help me through
when I'm gone, pick my body up and carry me
Home - take me home."

The Dickies: "See my way"
From the album: "All this and puppet stew"

90 mph stuff!

Take my poll!

Now when I watched this yesterday, I was convinced the model was spinning one way, and one way only.

Others saw the opposite.

Some saw both?

Make your decision (and please`vote accordingly) before you read why you may see it the way you do?

Which way is the model spinning?
Clockwise?
Anticlockwise?
In both directions?

It's probably already happened

Today's lyric:
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
"Frailest, purest girl the world has seen,
According to her ma, according to her pa,
And everybody said, that she knew no sin and did no wrong,
'Til she walked the streets of the big black smoke,
Of the big black smoke."

The Kinks: "Big Black Smoke"
From the album: "The Best of.."

All the breast

Reconnections

Today's lyric:
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
"So you celebrate your love
With a little house, just made for two
With all the lovely things you can buy brand new
You gonna settle down
Just the both of you, you gonna be a good soul
From now on....."

The Levellers: "Celebrate"
From the album: "One way of life"

Fiddlee dee dee music

Down on Pompey at the weekend, to see the Big Yin on Saturday, we were browsing for Freeview boxes for Ol' Sparky (who may be back on the blog?) and our view of the shelf was obstructed by another customer.

Peering round her to check out the options, she eventually moved away just as we were re-joined by Mrs.D. and Mrs Ol' Sparky. At which point, the customer introduced herself as Mrs.D's bridesmaid, who we hadn't seen for over ten years. (Turned out she was visiting her mum and needed to replace the carer's Freeview box.)

So a rapid life-catch-up ensued (and a subsequent 'phone-call resulted in a booked meet-up proper)

Then edging past a couple to reach our seats at the Billy Connolly concert, they looked at me and asked "Are you Mr.D.?"

"Er, yes" I replied, desperately trying - as you do - to recall from where I knew them.

Turned out she'd worked for me over twenty years ago, and at the time was dating a guy who - at nineteen - was having treatment for a second occurrence of test1cular cancer. And there he was - large as life and twice as ugly, as they say - but fit and healthy to boot and now married to her. Aah..

And we six - plus the rest of the packed audience - pi55ed ourselves for two solid hours as Billy took that long to complete the story he set out with.

If you get the chance - go see him.

There's never anything on the telly..

Today's lyric:
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
"To change the mood a little, I've been posing 'round the pub.
I see in my reflection: I'm looking slightly rough.
I fancy this; I fancy that. I want a piece of flash.
I give a little muscle and I spend a little cash
But all I get is bitter and a nasty little rash.
And by the time I'm sober, I've forgotten what I've had.
And everybody tells me that it's cool to be a cat.
It's Cool for cats.
Cool for cats...."

Squeeze: "Cool for cats"
From the album: "Essential Squeeze"

All the best

There's nothing on the telly

What about? Death Watch beetle?

Rolling fog

Today's lyric:
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
"So farewell mademoiselle, knicker-bocker hotel
Farewell to money owed
But when your leg still hurts and you need more shirts
You gotta get back on the road."

Ian Dury and The Blockheads: "Sweet Gene Vincent"
From the album: "New boots and panties"

A great loss to the music world x 2

coming up Old Father Thames 'smorning.

I didn't think the mobyphone would do it full justice, with the Belfast appearing to be steaming out of a smokescreen, whereas it was berthed as usual but swathed in a thick mist.

I just knew I should have toted the proper camera in with me today..

Ok! So?

Today's lyric:
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
"Since the dawn of time I've rolled across the earth
Spinning in the dust

Long before your birth eatin' tar and gasoline
Every light I see is green
Open pipes, my machine's triple-plated chrome

Spirit of the wheel, Wheels of fire burn the night
Ride across the sky
Wheels of fire burning bright
We live to ride."

Mansun: "An ode to the lyrical trainspotter"
From the album: "Attack of the grey lantern"

Bloody marvellous

Yes - I know that offering a guest blogspot is a 'cheap' way of providing posts, but I've read several joint efforts recently and there is a certain 'sparking off' against the contributors?

So if I can't sort Ol' Sparky out at the weekend (we're going to see The Big Yin) with his own new blog, I may well exercise my rights and open up this little beauty..

Sharing

Today's lyric:
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
"I tried but I could not find a way
Looking back all I did was look away
Next time is the best time we all know
But if there is no next time where to go?
She's the sweetest queen I've ever seen
See here she comes, see what I mean?
I could talk talk talk, talk myself to death
But I believe I would only waste my breath
Ooh show me."

Roxy Music: "Remake/Re-model"
From the album: "Roxy Music"

fantastic trackery

Now - having failed to get off my virtual ar5e for several months and set him up (again) - should I let Ol' Sparky 'guest' here occasionally to spice things up a bit?

Content would be unedited, but he'd have to use the Spellchecker...

I know that dreams are the "last resort"

Today's lyric:
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
"My girl's mad at me
Been on the telephone for an hour
We hardly said a word
I tried and tried but I could not be heard
Why can't I explain?
Why do I feel this pain?
'Cause everything I say
She doesn't understand
She doesn't realise
She takes it all the wrong way."

Madness: "My Girl"
From the album: "Complete Madness"

Sublime

but last night, Jeremy Clarkson and I were on foot, chasing a Volkswagen Caravanette and when we had to give up, microlighted back to his house, where he showed me how to bring down bats with a slingshot. In the pitch dark.

The noise was indescribable and i was just wondering how he got away without disturbing his neighbours when one appeared at the doorway, shotgun-toting, and suggested Mr C. "got the fcuk out of here."

So the bonhomious buffoon sloped off home, where I tried vainly to secure the door behind me with busted locks and bars, before crawiling into the hobbit-like guest bedroom.

Apparently his own return had awoken the current Mrs C. who insisted on being introduced to me and - before you second-guess where this is going i.e. menage a trois I woke up.

Buggah.

Enjoy your weekends, y'all

For National Poetry Day

Today's lyric:
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
"There's no poetry between us'
Said the paper to the pen
"And I get nothing for my trouble
But the ink beneath my skin"
If your clothes are getting weary
And your soul's gone out of style -
Blame the miracle mile.
And the bottom of the ladder
Paint your eyes and hide the tatters
What's the matter baby?."

Gary Jules: "No poetry"
From the album: "Trading snakeoil for wolftickets"

Sublime

For National Poetry Day

Seven Bridges Road
by Steve Young

There are stars in the Southern sky
Southward as you go
There is moonlight and moss in the trees
Down the Seven Bridges Road

Now I have loved you like a baby, like some lonesome child
And I have loved you in a tame way
And I have loved you wild

Sometimes there's a part of me has to turn from here and go
Running like a child from these warm stars
Down the Seven Bridges Road

There are stars in the Southern sky
And if ever you decide you should go
There is a taste of time-sweetened honey
Down the Seven Bridges Road

No pockets in a shroud

Today's lyric:
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
"Maybe you wonder where you are
I don't care
Here is where time is on our side
Take you there...take you there."

Talking Heads: "Road to nowhere"
From the album: "Once in a lifetime"

apt

Yesterday, we laid the body of our neighbour and friend D to rest.

He'd made it to four-score, had been married 57 years (produced some stunning grand-daughters) and was evidently quietly loved and respected by family, colleagues, social acquaintances and square-dancers alike.

Pragmatic and private, I hadn't expected quite so much religion in the committal, but each to his own.

Although the sky pilot* couldn't resist a dig/reference to D perhaps reviewing his attitude towards faith, as if - by this time, with him having been dead for ten days - it would make any effing difference about how his spirit might spend eternity?

Honestly, there won't be any god-botherers at my funeral. But if I get half the turn-out of people who crowded into the chapel yesterday - when it was pi55ing it down outside - I'll be well chuffed.

Assuming I'm aware, of course...
